Exploring Healthcare with HOSA

Exploring Healthcare with HOSA

At Bloomfield Hills High School, many students show interest in a future within the health care industry. The BHHS co-curricular club, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) offers students an exciting, professional opportunity to explore the industry as they strengthen their problem-solving, research, oratory, and leadership skills.

While HOSA is primarily for students interested in the medical, dental, and veterinary fields, any students interested in professional development, community service, and competition among peers can, and do, join the club. The BHHS HOSA chapter is student-run with guidance from science teacher Dr. Noelle Collis. Throughout the HOSA competition season, members compete in teams or as individuals in over 90 different events related to all aspects of the health care industry; these categories vary widely from showing mastery on a written test to presenting medical research to a panel of experts. HOSA President, Katie Tadesse (grade 12), and Vice-President, Jared She (grade 11), along with 4 captains oversee and coach the team of over 75 Black Hawk students.

During the 2025 Leadership State Conference, 20 Black Hawks competed with thousands of other students and networked with industry professionals and experts. Tadesse, a member of HOSA since 9th grade, recalled, “I met a ton of doctors in the field that I wanted to go into. This really solidified that medicine is something that I want to do.” Dr. Collis noted, “The BHHS HOSA team showcased their professionalism and impressive healthcare knowledge. Each student brought a unique skill set and a passion for healthcare that was evident in their performances. Their ability to work collaboratively, think critically, and apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios reflects the high standards of our program and the dedication of our future healthcare leaders.”

This past December, the current HOSA team excelled at the Regional Leadership Conference with an impressive 32 participants advancing to the State Leadership Conference being held near Traverse City on April 16 and 17. At this year’s event, students will not only enjoy professional competitive events, but also networking and social events, workshops, an exhibitor’s exposition, friendly games, and opportunities to investigate potential careers.

BHHS proudly supports the HOSA team and wishes them success as they represent their community at the State Leadership Conference.
