Mayas Smith Honored With Special Tribute

February 25, 2025 was a thrilling day for Mayas Smith, a grade 11 student at Bloomfield Hills High School. On this special day, Smith received a prestigious honor from State Representative Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing. The tribute is signed by both Representative Steele and State Senator Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield), currently serving as President ProTempore of the Senate. Smith’s efforts in creating the Young Citizens Academy were recognized with a legislative Special Tribute from the Michigan House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Young Citizens Academy was formed when Smith began visiting Riverside Elementary in Waterford Township while in grade 9. Smith donated books and read to the students. The following year, Smith donated games and then taught the kids how to play them. This year, Smith changed the focus to teaching civics to the young students. Smith explained, “Some ways I have taught civics include through mock elections to decide on class books to read, creating a class flag, as well as teaching the cardinal directions through engaging class activities.” Riverside Elementary teacher Kari Roethlisberger praised Smith saying, “Mayas is a remarkable youth and an outstanding citizen that should be recognized for his efforts in enhancing the experiences of elementary students.”

Rep. Donni Steele heard about Smith’s project and wanted to recognize the work in a meaningful way. Smith received the honor on the House Floor. Smith recalled a highlight of the day, “I happened to run into Senator Moss when I was looking into the empty Senate chamber, and he invited me in for a tour in which I had the honor to hold the gavel atop the dais.” In an office press release, Representative Steele stated, “Mayas is an exceptional young man taking steps to build a better future and better communities...Mayas is doing exemplary work, and I have no doubt he’ll continue to do so in the years to come.”

While reflecting on the remarkable experience, Smith expressed, “It meant a lot to be recognized for my service, especially by the same civic institutions that I teach about. I am very honored to have had the chance to introduce myself to so many interesting individuals and in such a great way.”
